– Chapter Fourteen –

The people gathered in the lab stared at the dead rat unable to understand what went wrong. They felt certain that their calculations were correct.

This now became a problem for the scientists to solve.

The three software specialists, knowing there was nothing further they could do now that Theory and the CAIN computers worked, left the citadel. They knew it would be a difficult task producing, selling, and marketing the CAIN computers to the outside world. Pooling their money together and with Norman giving them a sizable chunk, they knew they had enough money to make a start.

Now it was down to Professors Norman Rumble and Boran Ngem to solve the riddle, along with their sons and daughters-in-laws.

In his younger days, Boran spent time studying at European universities and, although his passion was archaeology and science, he became interested in astrology, so they named the project to create new life, *Ophiuchus... the new beginning.

Boran dissected the dead rat, taking countless tissue samples, but they could find no reason why the animal had not lived.

They repeated the process several times over the next few months using different specimens from monkeys and other rodents, but all produced the same result: a perfect replica, but dead. Even their attempts to artificially ventilate and shock start the heart failed to animate the animals.

When Norman and Boran analysed bones, organs and blood cells, they found anomalies in the structure of some bones and organs, and altered blood cells.

The Professors knew this made the bodies more efficient as the synthetic oxygen carrying cells, adhered to chromosomes and enzymes better.

They realised with these alterations there was nothing wrong with the anatomy and physiology to suggest why the animals had not lived.

Then, in 2007, Norman Junior had a theory, which he explained.

“Maybe the problem is that we just threw everything into a mix instead of the same way as nature; slowly, and piece by piece.” He continued. “We should start with a plain canvas and add the picture at different times.”

He simplified his theory by comparing it to a computer, “build the machine, the circuits, and hardware, and then add memory and programs.” The scientists listened to Norman Junior’s analogy. Boran and Norman looked at each other and smiled.

“That should work,” said Norman. “It makes perfect sense. Well done, son.” He patted his son proudly on the back.

“Okay,” said Boran, “back to the drawing board.”

After several more weeks, they attempted the Ophiuchus project again, although this time with some changes.

They instructed Theory to calculate the development in nature of a rat and inject cells into the body at specific times through the Shroud of Life.

Several days later, after Theory finished its calculations, the Professors and their sons stood by the Oven and gave instructions to create.

Theory and the Oven first made the bones cells.

Within a few days, a small skeleton appeared under the Shroud of Life. Theory then added separate organ cells, then the muscle cells, white cells, red cells, platelets, and finally skin and fur.

After several days, opaque membrane covered the rat.
